Duck and goose shooting are the most popular wildfowling sports and they require knowledge, skill, and proper outfitting.
Ducks and geese are hunted in flight. Hunters need to set up camouflaged blinds as the birds are frightened off by people. Decoys are also helpful in attracting ducks; there are many different varieties, each suited for different conditions. Water keel decoys work best in small, sheltered ponds while weighted keel decoys function well in large, rougher bodies of water.
Decoys also assist in attracting geese; some shooters will put out large numbers. Goose decoys range from ones that float in the water or fly like a kite to large decoys which double as blinds.
Duck and goose calling can attract the birds but shooters need to practice their calls before taking to the field.
Hunters need to have a shotgun that will function well in adverse conditions. A pumping shotgun is an inexpensive choice, can pull off multiple shots, and is less likely to clog then an automatic. The shotgun should either be not shiny or camouflaged. A shiny gun barrel can scare off the birds.
Shooters often buy large magnum-size ammunition but in many cases standard one and one-quarter-ounce (1.25oz) loads are just as effective.
Appropriate clothing is important for wildfowl hunting. Camouflaged clothing is essential. Because some of the best hunting is during inclement weather, waterproof outerwear is also a must. The most effective outerwear will come in layers, so shooters can adjust their clothing for changing conditions.
Footwear is essential element for duck shooters. Shooters in blinds on solid ground can wear waterproof insulated boots while those in marshes will need hip boots or waders.
