Shooting Vests
A well-fitting shooting vest, while not a mandatory piece of equipment, can add greatly to the enjoyment of the sport. A vest provides padding against recoil and storage for supplies and equipment.
There are three main configurations of shooting vests: all cloth, cloth in front and mesh in back, and all mesh. Many people prefer vests made of cloth in front and mesh in back because they provide substantial support and protection in the front and a cooling mechanism in the back.
Good fit is essential for a shooting vest so it is best to try it on before making a final decision. The vest should fit well at the chest; too large and the vest's mounting surface will shift when firing, too small and it will restrict motion. At the waist the vest should be belted or cinched so that the weight of the shells in the pockets does not hang from the shoulder, impeding motion of the shoulder. The length is also important because it should be easy to reach the shells in the pockets.
Vests are right-handed or left-handed, with the mounting surface located on the appropriate side. The most effective mounting surfaces are made from slip-resistant materials such as leather. Many vests have pockets where padding can be inserted to protect against recoil. The padding should not be too thick or else it makes it difficult to aim properly.
Additional accessories include a rear pouch for empties, a pocket for glasses, and a towel ring, depending on the requirements of the shooter.
